Miss Adell Collins

Dear Aunt,
I thought I would write and see if I could hear from you. We are all well and hope these few linew will find you the same. I expect you have forgot that you had a niece by the name of McDonald. I read and old letter that you wrote to pa a good many years ago and you said you always wanted to know our address, so I thought I would write to you. Pa has bought a farm two and one half (2 ½) miles west of Fredericktown. We moved on it the 2nd of Dec. 1897. We can see town from our East porch. I will be eighteen my next birthday. Ma is sewing carpet rags. Pa is working in the shop. And Josie has done to town with Herbie McD. How are all of my relatives and how many have I down there? I go to church nearly every Sunday at Fredericktown. I have a horse and buggy to use. Josie and I was visiting Sat & Sun where we moved from it is about ten miles away. We had company last night Wm. Schroeder and family and Uncle Alex and family. Josie is still single and has a bicycle so the girls can’t ask to ride with him. I am not keeping company. I expect you wonder who ma is it is pa’s wife he has been married to her about ten years. Her name is Sarah Witmer of Mich. We have four head of horses, six head of cattle, sixteen head of sheep and eight hogs and about everything that is necessary for farming there is sixty eight (68) acres in our farm, good house and barn and two good wells. We have not had any slieghting yet but there is some snow on the ground; and it is pretty cold out. I have been to the Spelling School twice and spelt them down twice. Measles and Mumps is the rage around Fredericktown. What is the style down there? I never had the measles and only had the mumps on one side.
I guess I will bring my manuscript to a close hoping to hear from you soon if not sooner.
You most affectionate niece
Adell Mc Donald
Fredericktown, Ohio (Knox Co.)
P. S. Come up and make us a visit.
Answer right away so I will know if you received this alright. I remain as B4

My Dear Friend,
Hello there, how are you anyhow? I thought I would stop a while and see how you were prospering. I received your message in due time and it was, indeed, a great surprise party as I supposed you would be so much wrapped in those boys that you would forget all about me, but I was very glad to hear from you and as a matter of course Genius wanted to know what you had to say so I just naturally let him read it and then he was satisfied. I suppose you enjoyed your ride the day you moved, judging from the company you was in. The “news” soon reached my ears. By the way he is going to California next month so the arrangements are now. What will “poor Mary” do? You can see by the heading of this letter where I am. I came here Saturday and will stay until Wednesday. There is so much excitement here (it is a very large city you know) that I can hardly stand it. Gertie lives on one of the back streets and it is so noisy I don’t know how it is in the main part of town.
Big Meeting begins here one week from tonight. It is going on in the Albright church now at Shauck. I have not been up yet would like to go Friday night. Where are you going Xmas? We are going to have a turkey roast and invite all the children. Minnie starts the 20th. I have not heard from Lillie since you moved. We were down to Mr. Walters last Tuesday P. M. Lettie Oberlin is coming up to Walters Saturday and Nellie wants me to come down but I would just a leave go to church for a change. How is your cousin. It was a narrow escape for sure. How old is he? Is that teacher married that you sat up with. How is Jud getting along any how? No hew was not up he can’t afford more than one girl at a time, especially when he stays with that one all night. Poor boy I bet he hasn’t worked a bit since the party.
What do you think of my cousin by this time. Your first partner you know? Arthur Shipley just went though town I suppose he is going to Gilead. He looked like he was pretty near frizzed.Miles’ were up last Sunday all day. Ben and May were over Monday night. Hershners have not been over yet. Well I guess I have written about all you want to know so I will close hoping to hear from you soon if not sooner.
I have two more letters to write yet or I would write more.
Bring your fellow and come up some Sunday and I will use him as mean as I know how.
So “Good bye” write soon,
From Your Best Friend

My Dear Friend:
Pleasure affords me the opportunity of writing to you. I have just finished a letter to Miss Sackett and your message had to turn up its “dirty little nose” and say “Here! my turn next.” But of course I could not refuse, although I knew it told a F I B. So it began to cast up to me- “Life before Love”—and what could I do but write to you first. I owe three letters besides yours and if I don’t answer the one I’m afraid I’ll be left, because it said “If the Spirit leads you, write!” it has been four weeks since I got it.
Well, enough of such nonsense for a time at least.
We are all well except me and you can readily see that I am losing my mind-what little I have left. I recon you are not slinging your feet tonight at Glossers, but I heard that Josie was coming up so I suppose he is seeing the whole performance – “er what”. I did not go as it is so muddy and I am not altoghether stuck on the mud just at present because I saw Mr. Lewis (today for a change) and waved to him. He had a smile on his face a mile long more or less. How is Mr. Cocanour anyhow Genius says to ask you if you have talked an hour with him lately. Gene thinks his name ought to be “Talkanour” How’s that ma’am?
We were up to Gertie’s today. Minnie, Al, the children, Gene, and I. And we had a big time when up in the wagon. Saturday we are going to have a family group picture taken so if you ever expect to get yours taken you had better go first for we might break the camera.
Joh is just getting ready to wash his dirty stinken feet so if you smell any sweet stuff on this letter you will know where it came from. He says “you dirty thing you what did you write that for?” Gardia is braiding her pig-tails up she must be looking for someone.
Oh,yes did you hear about the new mash? Lee Bishop took Lizzie to church at the Albrights one Sunday night during protracted meeting. They came in late so they had to go clear up in front on the front seat. They looked quite gay. I guess I will go over to Parsons next week some night and go to church at Perry- “Hagerstown.” Or Lizzie wants me to come and Maud too. Yess, Dell I would like to come down an dgo to church with you some Sunday and see some of thise pretty boys. But I want you to come up and see me. Lillie and Goldie are staying with Mag Hiskey now and will all winter if nothing happens.
We will bring Minnie down if we can and if they stay long enough. I suppose you heard about Glenn Lucas being dead and also Verna Smith nee Shafer’s new baby.
How far does Ora live from your house. (“Do you know where you are going to move yet”?) Do you catch on? Think of Wm. Hershners for a moment. How is your cousin the one that got shot?
I think by the sound of the wind the dance wil be a failure tonight. But who cares? Not I for one.
Well, gee whiz I must stop my ignorance and go to bed or you will never never write some more at al, at all. Wishing you a Sweet Goodnight, I must close by asking you to write soon, quicker, immediately.

Dear Cousin,
I will endeavor to answer your letter of Apr. 8
We are all well and hope these lines will find you al the same. The Dr. was out to see Grandmother yesterday morning. I saw Ora at Church is forenoon and said she was feeling better. she, Ora, said that she (Grandmother) wiped the dishes for Aunt Mary this morning.
You had ought to been down to the Commencement last Thursday night. There was seven in the class, including Lizzie McDonnell. The others were Edwin McKinney, Edgar Patterson, Martha Sargent, Maynard Frissell, Charles Bermont, Ward McCleary.
Lizzie was dow to Mt Vernon at the last examination and failed. I heard today that she got 50
% in Arithmetic. Edd McKinney had to go five , or six times and failed Ora has not many chickens but about 21 turkeys. That primrose you folks sent me is getting along nicely. It has bloomed once, and has commenced to bloom again.
Have you got your new dress for this summer? I have not got my hat and dress yet. I think some of getting a white dress.
I suppose you did not take in the excursion to Columbus today did you?
June 5: I will try and finish what I commenced about a week ago. Grandmother is felling a good bit better this week. She was over to our house last Wednesday. I supposed you have had strawbetties to eat before this time. We had a strawberry short-cake for supper last night for the first time.
You can tell Josie that I am much obliged to him for drawing those flowers. I tried to get J.F. to draw a picture on his paper; but he said he had too small a space to draw a picture.
Palmyra are going to observe Children’s Day tomorrow. Uncle Lewises talk of coming over tomorrow, then Ora and I are going up to Palmyra. We are going to have childrens day at our church a week from tomorrow.
Our school closed yesterday. Jay Crawford was our teacher.
I have been looking for you and Josie to dome down, but have not seen any body yet that looked like Josie and Dell. You said you were coming down this spring.
I will close hoping to hear from you I remain your Knox Co.

Pa and ma have gone to town, pa has been having the tooth ache for a few days and he was going to have them pulled tonight.
Tell Josie that if he likes his (bi-cy-cle) so well to ride it down here to see us once ina while.
I have written one letter tognight and want to write one to Estelle, then I will be out of debt.
Tell your ma that I have got grandpa’s carpet done and Mrs. Amose’s also., and we put our in this week, have gout about two yds wove on it.

Dear Cousin
I will try to answer your letter which I received the other day. was glad to hear from you.
Our entertainment went off pretty well we took in four dollars and ony charged the men five cents at the door and five for a box. You had ought to come down and go to church now for we have got a preacher now. I have only heard him three times, the first Sun, was the first ime he preached since they hired him.
I was to a taffy pulling last Wednesday night at Charley Beals there were about fourty there and would have been several more if it had not stormed. Well I was glad to hear that your entertainment went off all right, would like to have come up but it was to far.
I am at school there are only twenty one scholars on roll now but there are only thirteen here this morning.
Did Wm. Biddle get a certificate when he and Josie were to Mansfield that time.
Grandmother does not feel very well now.
Jim Halls moved to town last Tuesday they went off mad the women did not come up at all after they found out they had to move, we have found four bedbugs there since they left.

Dear Cousin
I will try and answer your letter which was dated June 24. I expect your have given up ever hearing from me again.
When your wrote to me our summer school was not out yet and you talked about coming down and going with me to school. Our fall and winter school began today but I did not go. I will start after the fall work is done. I suppose Genius would tell you all about meeting me in the road or anything else that he thought would interest you. Well if he did see my mother I hope he did not do like that fellow did that was with Josie on Bicycles that Sunday that they went by here.
I suppose you will enjoy yourself at the Belleville Street Fair, I don’t expect to go for pa will be sowing wheat and if he can’t go and take us he will be using the horse so we can’t go by ourselves.
I am going to study Complete Algebra, Book Keeping, Orthography, Civil Government and General History, and I almost got through Higher Arithmetic last summer I want to finish that then I am going to let Arithmetic rest for a while.
Miss Culp and Laura went to Mt. Vernon to the Street Fair to night and it is beginning to rain I think they will have a nice time getting home after they get off the train.
The Street Fair at Mt. Vernon is today (Mon) Tuesday, and Wednesday. I would like to go to both Street Fairs but they had them in too busy times.
Ray went to school today, there were only thirteen scholars.
It has been a long time since I wrote to you last but I have done better than Mary Ellen so you must scold me lighter than you do her.
We had a rel nice time at the exercises last Monday, there was forty-six wagons and buggies in the parade that is those of the business men besides spectators, the estimation of the number of people in town that day was three thousand people, the man that jumped off the 75 ft. pole hurt himself, the paper says slightly and probably fatally injured, the ballon ascension was real nice, it went up so smooth and so high.
Well I will have to close for thistime it is bedtime. Remember me to Uncle Bill and Aunt Sal, Pa, ma and Ray are just through shelling beans and I must quit writing for this time. Write soon. Don’t wait as long as I did.
Your Cousin

Miss Dell McDonald
Dear Cousin
I will try an answer your kind and most welcome letter which I received about three weeks ago.
I started to school three weeks ago next Monday, I only study four studies. Orthography , Physical Geography, History and Bookkeeping, but I am alone in all of my classes but History, so I can take pretty long lessons.
You wanted to know how the Bryan people were down here, I don’t know much about it for there are not very many only six in this school district. The Silver men have reorganized their Silver Club since the election. They are getting ready for 1900
I have got a yellow ribbon with McKinley’s name on it.
I forgot to tell you how many scholars we have, twenty-eight. I intended to study Civil Government but the teacher is just having us learn the constitution of the U.S. with our other History lesson.
Alice Ball is staying at grandmothers and is going to school this winter, she had the sore throat for the last week.
Ray has got the sick headache and ma has the rheumatism in her shoulder so I have both of them to wait on, they keep me on the go nearly all the time so I can’t have my mind to myself as I like to when I write letters.
It does not seem hardly possibly that it is almost Christmas, when we are having such nice weather, we only have one more week of school, then we will have two weeks vacation.
Charlie Culp and Belle Richards were married the night before Thanksgiving, Culps made a dinner for him. I guess there were about twenty-five invited but about half of them did not come. I think there was only thirteen there with Culps family and I know of thirteen that were invited and were not there. Alt Blacks family were all there.
Ma and pa were up to uncle Joseph McDonald’s about three weeks ago, they told them that Elwood McDonald was married and that they had an invitation to the wedding.
They say that this is going to be the coldest winter we have had since 1813. I don’t remember how cold it was then do you. If it is going to be so cold it had better be getting there, or it will be cold next spring when it ought to be getting warm.
I have not seen anything of Myrta Bigbee since she moved, and we have not heard why they left Gordon’s place. Mr. Gordon is over eighty years old, and we heard that he was married this fall but I guess it is untrue.
Uncle Alexanders were over to grandmothers last Sun. Grandmother was over to uncle Joshes on Thanksgiving day, she did not feel very well this morning but I guess she feels better now, she generally feels worse in the morning than any other time.
Well it is about 4 o’clock and Ray has not vomited since morning so I think he will get better now.
Well I will have to close for I will have all of the evenings work to do.
Write soon and excuse poor writing.
From your Cousin Ora

We are both well as usual, but am sorry to say McGinty has lost his apetite which I am very sorry.
Mother and I did a large washing today, we would wash awhile, and act a dunce a while longer than we washed.
We ate four times today. We ate our breakfast, then in a little while we finished up a coffee cake, I intended to have baked beans for supper but they got done about two o’clock and we sat down and ate them. They were good because I baked then, first I ever tired.
Well that is enough on that subj. The M.E. Church is holding protracted meeting, I guess I will go done tonight have not been down yet. Mother can’t go and I dislike to leave her alone so I stay at home a great deal closer on that account. I am looking forward to the wk. you will spend with us in Belleville.
Tell your Father he need not worry about our gadding the streets, they have no charms for me, and if they had Mother would charm me.
When you write, please send me a picture of that __________________ and be particular in drawing the dimensions, that is to have them all on . I will be greatly obliged to you if you do. I will give the map to Clem Baker and he will make one.
Well it is calm this morning, last night the wind blew a perfect hurricane. I dislike to hear it blow as it makes me lonely.
Do you remember the night I wanted to yell. You can do everything but that. If we did the neighbors would flock in to lean the cause of the disturbance.
I suppose you have that dialog committed perfectly by this time. I have imagined dhow things will be that night and have you pictured out, of course I do not how what will be in the play, but I imagine the scenery and how things will be arranged.
High School had quite a program last Friday celebrating Washington’s birthday. I could not go over as I was expecting company that did not come, if I know then what I do now I should have gone. Bart is sick with lagrippe and I could not come.
I will bring this epistle to a close and hope to hear from you soon.
Yours lovingly,
Mary X

Well I will have to close for this time it is bedtime. Remember me to Uncle Bill and Aunt Sal, Pa, ma and Ray are just through shelling beans and I must quit writing for this time. Write soon. Don’t wait as long as I did.
Your Cousin
Ora

Dear Cousin;
I will write you another letter, but don’t think I had better send it to town with J.F.
We are all well and hope this letter will reach you all the same.
I haven’t seen Grandmother’s for nearly two weeks but I guess they are well, or we would hear from them.
I suppose your school hasent commenced yet. Our school commenced on the 24th of August, and Quaker commenced last Monday. I do not know wether Ora started or not I have not seen her this week.
I was to the Street Fair yesterday at Mt. Vernon. Mattie Eppley and I went down together. We went down on the noon train and came back on the nine o’clock train the train was crowded going and coming. I felt like I had been to the Fair this morning. I felt as if my joints needed greasing before they would work well.
I suppose you attended the Fair at Belleville and saw that negro jump from the pole into the water.
Last Monday Fredericktown celebrated Labor Day on a grand scale. They had and industrial parade, horseless carriage race, horse race, balloon ascension, negro jumping from a 67 ½ ft. pole into the creek. It was real good. I would liked to attend the Belleville Fair but I couldn’t.
How have you been getting along since I was up to your house.
I saw Stella McDonald since I was up to your house and she asked me if I was one of those person’s that were down at the bridge. I told her I was.
Has you Pa seen Daisy’s man to say anything about that cat?
Well I guess this is all for this time.
I will close hoping to hear from you.
I remain your Knox Co Cousin
Mary Amos
